Create or refill a prescription

You can create a prescription or refill to ensure necessary details, including the Rx ID, provider, and refill information, are captured and tracked in the patient record, as well as print on the prescription label.

To create a prescription:

  1. Search for and select the patient.
  2. To start a new consultation, click Create Consultation.
    OR
  3. To use an existing draft consultation, click the Consultations tab, click the menu button, and click View to open the draft consultation for editing.
    Note: You can also click the consultation number to open a consultation.
  4. From the Provider drop-down list, select or verify the provider.
  5. In the Product/Service area, search for and select the product.
  6. Click the  menu button  and select Prescribe/Refill.
    Note: Tracked products (vaccines, digital) or diagnostic products cannot be prescribed
  7. Edit the quantity prescribed, if needed.
  8. Enter the number of refills or select As Needed to authorize refills.
  9. Review the Provider. Edit as needed.
  10. Review or enter the Instructions.
    Note: Any edits to the Qty, Provider, and Instructions fields will automatically update the consultation product line.
  11. From the Batch drop-down list, select or verify the batch information.
  12. Click Save.
    Note: The consultation will be save and an Rx ID will display under the Product/Service on the consultation to indicate the product has been prescribed.
  13. Print your prescription labels.
    • To print a label for a specific product, click the menu button on the product line, and then click Print label
    • To print all labels for the consultation, click Print Labels at the top of the window. Note that each product that you need a label for must have a note in the Label field on the product line.
      IMPORTANT: Make sure you complete steps 6-12 prior to printing your labels to ensure the Rx ID, number of refills, and the provider appear on each prescription label.

To refill a prescription:

Neo provides flexible workflows to easily refill eligible prescriptions starting either from:

  • a patient consultation.
  • the patient Rx tab.

Tip: You can refill one or more prescriptions at once from the patient Rx tab.

To refill a prescription from a patient consultation:

  1. Search for and select the patient.
  2. To start a new consultation, click Create Consultation.
    OR
  3. To use an existing draft consultation, click the Consultations tab, click the menu button, and click View to open the draft consultation for editing.
    Note: You can also click the consultation number to open a consultation.
  4. From the Provider drop-down list, select or verify the provider.
  5. In the Product/Service area, search for and select the product.
  6. Click the menu button  and select Prescribe/Refill.
  7. From the Rx ID drop-down list, select the prescription to refill.
    Note: If there is no refill option, the patient has no available refills for the product.
  8. Review the Qty, Provider, and Instructions. Edit as needed.
    Note: The information in these fields is copied from the prescription you selected to refill. Any edits to these fields will automatically update the consultation product line but leave the original prescription intact.
  9. From the Batch drop-down list, select or verify the batch information.
  10. Click Save.
  11. Print your prescription labels.
    • To print a label for a specific product, click the menu button on the product line, and then click Print label
    • To print all labels for the consultation, click Print Labels at the top of the window. Note that each product that you need a label for must have a note in the Label field on the product line.
      IMPORTANT: Make sure you complete steps 6-12 prior to printing your labels to ensure the Rx ID, number of refills, and the provider appear on each prescription label.

To refill a prescription from the patient Rx tab:

  1. Search for and select the patient.
  2. Click the Rx tab.
  3. Optional. Click a column heading to sort by that column.
    Note: The Instructions column cannot be sorted.
  4. Optional. For prescriptions with refills, click the View button to view refill history for the Rx ID.
    Note: The View button will only display for prescriptions where at least one authorized refill has been filled.
  5. Select the check box on the row of each prescription you want to refill.
    Note: The check box will only display for prescriptions where refills were authorized and where there is at least 1 remaining refill.
  6. Click the Refill button.
  7. Select where to add the chosen prescription refill(s).
    • Select New Consultation to create a new consultation.
    • Select a draft consultation, if available.
      Note: You can choose from the three most current draft consultations that were created in the past 30 days.

  8. Tip: If your practice uses batches, it is recommended you review the batch information for each refill.
    • Click the menu button  and select Prescribe/Refill.
    • From the Batch drop-down list, select or verify the batch information.
    • Click Save.
  9. Click Save.
  10. Print your prescription labels.
    • To print a label for a specific product, click the menu button on the product line, and then click Print label
    • To print all labels for the consultation, click Print Labels at the top of the window. Note that each product that you need a label for must have a note in the Label field on the product line.

To view a patient’s prescription history:

Only prescriptions with an Rx ID generated by Neo will show on the Rx tab.

  1. Search for and select the patient.
  2. Click the Rx tab.
  3. Optional: Click a column heading to sort by that column.
    Note: The Instructions column cannot be sorted.
  4. Optional: Click the menu button  to view the consultation or reprint the prescription label.
  5. Optional: For prescriptions with refills, click the view button to view refill history for the Rx ID.
    Note: The view button will only display for prescriptions where  at least one authorized refill has been filled.

Tip: The Fill Date is consultation product line date. If this date is incorrect, you can edit the consultation.

To delete a prescription:          

Occasionally you may need to delete an already-prescribed product from a consultation due to selecting a wrong patient or medication. Prescriptions can only be deleted from draft consultations. If you need to delete a prescription from an unpaid, paid, or partly paid consultation, see Update a consultation for additional information.

  1. Search for and select the patient.
  2. To use an existing draft consultation, click the Consultations tab, click the menu button, and click View to open the draft consultation for editing.
    Note: You can also click the consultation number to open a consultation.
  3. Locate the prescribed product you want to delete.
  4. Click the menu button  and select Remove.
    Note: Removing a prescribed product will remove the prescription from the patient Rx tab, increase remaining eligible refills by 1, and return the quantity to inventory.
  5. Click Save.
