In Product Settings, create product classes that are used to categorize your products and services, for better accuracy of reporting and making product bulk changes.
You can create new product classes, or edit or deactivate existing product classes, as needed.
Product classes are used in all Product Class dropdowns, including the Products page, Product details, Product Bulk Changes, and reports.
For multi-branch practices. Product classes are administered at the Company level (i.e. the product classes are used by all branches). You can view the total number of active and inactive products across all branches assigned to each product class.
Permissions: System Admin
Add product class
- Click your name in the menu bar. Then select Administration.
- Under System Admin, click Product Settings.
- Click Add Product Class.
- In the Product Class Name box, enter a name for the product class.
Note: Duplicate product classes cannot be saved. If you see the warning Product class already exists, edit the name. - Click the green check to save.
Or click the red X to cancel.
Note: The new product class is automatically added to the top of the list. - Repeat steps 3-5 for each additional product class you need to add.
When the page is refreshed or the next time you return to the page, the product classes will be in alphabetical order.
Edit a product class
- Click your name in the menu bar. Then select Administration.
- Under System Admin, click Product Settings.
- In the Search Product Classes box, enter the full or partial name of the product class you want to edit.
- To edit a product class, hover your mouse at the end of the row of the product class you want to edit. Then click the pencil icon.
Note: Diagnostic product classes provided in the Directory of Services – IDEXX Reference Laboratories, IDEXX VetLab Station, and Antech Diagnostic – cannot be edited.
- Edit the product class name and click the green check to save your changes.
Or click the red X to cancel.
Deactivate a product class
A product class can be deactivated when it has no products assigned to it.

- Click your name in the menu bar. Then select Administration.
- Under System Admin, click Product Settings.
- In the Search Product Classes box, enter the full or partial name of the product class you want to deactivate.
- Review the number of active products. If it is not zero (0), you will not be able to deactivate the product class. Use the Product Bulk Changes tool to reassign the products to a different product class.
- To deactivate a product class, click the toggle. If the product class was deactivated, you will see a yellow success message in the upper-right corner; and the product class will be hidden from the active list.
If the number of active products is greater than zero (0), you will see an alert prompting you to reassign the products to a different product class. Click Bulk Changes to be taken to the Product Bulk Changes tool. After you reassign the products to a different product class, return to Administration > Product Settings and follow the steps in this section.
Note: Diagnostic product classes provided in the Directory of Services – IDEXX Reference Laboratories, IDEXX VetLab Station, and Antech Diagnostic – cannot be deactivated.
